Republican Congressman Devin Nunes has filed five lawsuits this year against members of the free press and private citizens (including his own constituents). His complaints mostly stem from criticisms leveled at him on social media and unflattering, though verifiably factual news stories.

In the unlikely event that Rep. Nunes were to win all of his lawsuits (minus the one he dropped), and be awarded the amount he is seeking, it would amount to almost half a BILLION dollars ($484,900,000).

To put this eye-popping sum of money into perspective, this is approximately what Space X spent to develop the Falcon Heavy rocket and launch it into Earth's orbit and back. It's almost $60 million more than GDP of the Polynesian island nation of Tonga, or over 3,000 times Nunes' declared net worth of $158,001 as of 2016.

Rep. Nunes has repeatedly railed against the homeless in the state of California. On August 31, 2019 he posted a picture on Instagram, mocking a homeless person's ad hoc shelter and said, "Teepees back in CA after being gone for 150 years. For homeless not Native Americans..."

The irony of him complaining about problems that are within his purview as a member of Congress seems to have eluded him, much like a fire fighter idly complaining about a house fire.

Nunes has not proposed any legislative solutions to this problem, and has even repeatedly voted against bills that would assist at-risk people from becoming homeless, such as HR5510 Aiding Those Facing Foreclosure Act in 2010. This vote followed the Great Recession, which pushed many of his struggling constituents out on the streets.

In addition, Nunes has voted against many reforms aimed at preventing such a crisis from occurring in the future, such as HR 3915 - Mortgage Reform and Anti-Subprime Lending Act of 2007.

With no solution in mind, homelessness in Nunes' congressional district, CA-22, is exploding, rising 23% in Fresno County since just last year. According to the Fresno Bee there are 1,125 homeless individuals in Fresno alone.

It's highly unlikely Rep. Nunes will see even a fraction of the amount he's seeking from these lawsuits, but if he does, we demand that Devin Nunes use all his lawsuit awards to buy each homeless person in his district a 4-bedroom house.

According to the Zillow Home Value Index a 4-bedroom house in Fresno costs an average of $325,000. If Congressman Nunes were to buy each of Fresno's 1,125 homeless individuals a 4-bedroom house at this price it would cost him $365,625,000. This would still leave him with $119,275,000, or 685 years worth of his salary as a member of the House of Representatives.

We know that these lawsuits will have an effect of chilling free speech and make private citizens and members of the press think twice before publicly criticizing a corrupt politician, but we still think it's worth redeeming some value to society from such an unprecedentedly stupendous cash windfall to one individual.

Devin Nunes, if you're going to attack our most precious constitutional right, we the American people, demand that you put your ill-gotten wealth toward the betterment of society.
