Reconsideration of MahaGov decision to convert forts into heritage hotels
"Government of Maharashtra is looking to convert some of its forts into heritage hotels to promote private investment into the tourism sector" (Indian Express). Unlike the forts of Rajasthan or elsewhere in India the forts of Maharashtra are in delicate condition. Most of them receive a heavy rainfall which has made them more hotchpotch. Further, most of the forts come under the joint jurisdiction of ASI and State and/or Centre governed forest department and harbour and/or support plethora of biodiversity. Recent cases of rave parties, year end parties, illegitimate encroaching of historic structures and forest areas has raised a huge concern on conservation of forts, their associated forest and their historic value. The current decision threatens this conservation much more than any other decision in the past e.g. reconstruction of fort walls by unskilled labours. This petition thus demands for reconsideration of the decision and more wiser planning.
