On Wednesday, August 25, 2021, the FBI raided the homes of Detroit City Council Member Scott Benson, his Chief of Staff, Carol Banks; and Council Member Janee Ayers. Also in August, Council Member Andre Spivey was charged with accepting a bribe from undercover officers. In May, Council Member Gabe Leland pleaded guilty. All charges and investigations involved selling votes for city contracts. Selling votes is beneath the dignity of Council, and adds to the burden of city taxpayers.

Council Members pledge to faithfully execute their duty to manage City money, and must enjoy a reputation above reproach. With four of nine elected Council Members under investigation, charged or convicted, Council should not vote on further contracts at this time. All who have accepted bribes should resign immediately.
