Designated Dead Week Needed for Students at CSU

The purpose of this petition is to raise more awareness about the level of stress in students the week before finals week each semester. We refer to this week as dead week. Increased stress levels lead to a decrease in academic performance and emotional stability. Many student organizations, clubs, sports, professors and teaching assistants often assign busy work/more assignments/sport practices the week before finals due to low assignment numbers and class numbers. This often stresses out students and makes it even harder to study for upcoming final exams and projects. The Resources for Disabled Students and the campus health center is often overwhelmed with the amount of students that need health accommodations (due to stress) all at once. We are looking for support to amend the Academic Faculty and Administrative Professional Manual I.6.1 to include
- no new material after the Wednesday of dead week
- no new major assignments during dead week (must be in syllabus)
- mandatory review days
- recognizing dead week as a university-wide event
- no practices for out of season sports
- no mandatory meetings/functions for organizations (FSLife, clubs, etc.)
We are also writing to ASCSU, Tony Frank, and the Dean's of colleges to get support for this amendment. There are many universities throughout the United States, including Iowa State, Purdue, Texas University and University of Kentucky that recognize dead week for students.
