Jennifer Wells started this petition to Des Moines Public Market Partnership

Movement 515 has changed and saved the lives of thousands of Des Moines young people.  For years they have practiced and hosted events at the Des Moines Social Club in the city center near to the DART bus station making it easily accessible for the youth.  They have a contract to hold practices and events there through May 2020.

On September 13th, they were finally officially notified that the Des Moines Social Club would be possibly changing to a public market and that the collaboration of Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, Christensen Development, architecture and engineering firm BBS, Polk County, City of Des Moines, Drake University and the Greater Des Moines Partnership would not be honoring their contract after the end of 2019.  Today, October 9th, they were informed that they would no longer be able to use the facility after the end of November 2019 and could not do their Teen Summit in early November which leaves this group feverishly finding alternatives.

The vision of the market reads, "The vision of a public market is to create a flexible space that further develops a community around local food, art, entertainment, and innovation. The project offers a hub for culinary classes and experiences, educational engagement and outreach, entrepreneurial activities and unique events," but this vision clearly is not inclusive of some of our most vulnerable youth in Des Moines. Our community agencies are frequently professing their commitment to mental health and equity, so we strongly encourage them to make decisions that reflect their commitment.
