CIRCUS CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Jul 10, 2013 — Many Thanks go to each and every person who signed our circus campaign petition; we amassed a total of 7901 signatures, but please continue to promote this campaign.
The meeting with the Department of Environmental Affairs yesterday provided us with some long awaited answers. Unfortunately it is now clear that Animal Welfare falls outside of the department’s ambit and mandate.
It was a very open and constructive meeting, and there were a few points that we raised that the department will be acting on, but ultimately the Department of Environmental Affairs is unable to ban the use of wild animals from circus acts.
We will now be redirecting our focus to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Our online petition will continue, and the more signatures that we have, the better. In the interim we continue to urge South Africans to boycott circus acts that use wild animals.
We will keep our supporters updated and advise as soon as we have arranged a meeting with DAFF.
