According to DOH, “In the Philippines, 3.3 million Filipinos suffer from depressive disorders, with suicide rates in 2.5 males and 1.7 males per 100,000.”

Stigma and lack of awareness of mental illness are obstacles to seeking help and encouraging improved mental health. Most students today suffer from anxiety and depression. Depression and anxiety may occur simultaneously. Without a person noticing that depressive thoughts and feelings, depression may take hold slowly and eventually consume their outlook and their lives. Some people believe that depression is easily recognizable but in fact it is said that symptoms of depression can take on many forms.

Studies show that stigma against mental illness remains strong, mostly due to media perceptions and lack of awareness. Mental health helps decide how we cope with stress, how we relate to others and how we make decisions. Many students experience tension, bullying and loneliness. Learning about mental health conditions will have a beneficial impact on depressed students. They will hear about counseling and how to cope with their problems.

Mental health is just as important as physical health.
