Academic freeze refers to the cancellation of formal schooling amid the COVID-19 crisis in the country. Why do we still romanticize underprivileged Filipino academic resilience and sacrifice the lives of the “hope of the future” — when there is still no nationwide mass testing — just to resume classes?

With a mental health pandemic and digital divide cutting deeper into our educational system, an “academic freeze” must be considered. Not all has the means to continue schooling while in this world wide pandemic.

Moreover, in light of recent events, including the storm surges and floods that has affected many students, the question of what to do with the current semester has begun making rounds among student bodies in many schools and universities.

As such, we join students across the country in demanding a national academic break until the following conditions have been met. Furthermore, academic freeze/break should be met until:

* flood waters in areas affected have subsided

* telecom and power infrastructure ravaged by the typhoons have been repaired

* students and their families have fully recovered from the multitude of disasters

Mostly the students are just attending virtual classes to pass the semester but are not totally learning, plus they are just bombarded with loads of school works and it is not totally effective. We should accept the fact the we are not fully ready to face school year in a digital mode. We should not force for the sake only of not having the school year continued in this time. We should prioritize more of our health and how this pandemic would end.

Together, let’s sign this petition that no students must be left behind.
