The Removal of DePauw 's 'Columbian' Boulder
On 1892, DePauw engraved a “Columbian” Boulder that commemorates the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ first voyage to the New World. The DePauw student body recognizes that Christopher Columbus is falsely acclaimed and historically represented throughout our education of our nation. In addition, as a result of colonial exploitation this boulder represents racism, rape, genocide, and pillage ignoring the identities of indigenous people not only in the United States but also globally.
Today, the “Columbian” Boulder is used as tradition primarily in white greek life and the overall student environment. The tradition not only exploits the physical bodies and health of students, in addition this tradition is used to haze in white greek life. The DePauw Student Body realizes the truth about Christopher Columbus and demands the immediate removal of the “Columbian Boulder”.
If DePauw considers itself to be a safe, welcoming and a diverse community it will hear these demands and accept them. DePauw MUST work harder on creating a safer and more inclusive environment for BIPOC.
