Hello, I hope you’re all staying hunkered down and safe during these uncertain times. Academic wise I know switching entirely to an online learning basis is not only hard for us students, but for the professors and administration as well. I know there are so many concerns and questions circling around, but I just wanted to express how I was feeling. The entire world is experiencing an abundance of anxiety and unpredictability during this hard time. Going to school full time while also experiencing a spike in financial, health, social, and mental anxiety/ uncertainty has already been difficult. Personally, I know that I currently live with my mom who is of very high risk for developing this virus. She is over the age of 65 and has underlying health conditions(COPD, asthma, and calcification of the pulmonary and coronary arteries). I find it very unsettling to have to deal with not only keeping myself healthy and safe, but an overwhelming pressure of having to take extra precautions to protect my mom as well.

I would like to use this platform and my voice to express the idea of a “pass or fail” agenda (I know the University of Illinois, Northern Illinois, Illinois State and other universities across the nation have already implemented this as well). The reason why I believe this would be so beneficial, is because it would somewhat relieve the stress that many of us students already feel on top of school. Since this online learning is new to everyone it would be very unfortunate for students GPA and academic achievement to be compromised due to external forces. Having to deal with all the extra stress during this pandemic while also adapting to full online courses is only causing much more anxiety which ultimately will lead to poorer mental, social, financial, and physical health. If a “pass or fail” adjustment was implemented into our curriculum here at DePaul, students would be able to continue to succeed in their classes and have a better handle on the current uncontrollable circumstances we have all been suddenly thrown into.

Personally for me, I take my grades very seriously and work hard to succeed in my classes. I find it unjust to expect us students to perform at the same academic level as previous quarters due to the abundance of external hardships. I know that each and every student, Professor, staff members, and administrator will all be affected differently by this pandemic, whether it be physically, mentally, or financially; but the overall conclusion is that this is a time of great adjustment and adaptation for everybody.

I know I am speaking for myself, but I am sure that the majority of other students would greatly benefit from a “pass/fail” implementation.

Thank you for all you have already done in adjusting the curriculum to the best of your ability.

I hope you consider my proposal and pass the message along to anyone who would be in charge of making this final decision. Thank you for your time and consideration.
