Mental health is the hidden disability that many of us struggle with on a day to day basis. Paranoia, psychosis and the inability to communicate effectively with strangers inhibit a fair and objective application process.
We want the DWP to acknowledge the immense psychological stress that is put on those who suffer during the application process.
My disability is invisible but it's my daily lived experience it's time we were treated fairly and our voices heard. I believe a system where face to face assessments are carried out only by those who are trained in the mental health profession.
More safeguarding is needed for those who will find the health assessment alarming and detrimental to their personal wellbeing. Either through home visits or more paper based assessments. Speak to the clients primary and secondary caregivers those who understand and can give clarification to how distressing the process is. We have a right not just to exist but to learn to live a full life.
We are people who like everyone else have the right to be treated fairly and with compassion
