3 WAY STOP / CROSSWALK AT GLENMARY AVE. AND BROOKLINE AVE.

Dear Neighbors –

I have been exploring the option of having a three way stop and/or crosswalk placed at the intersection of Glenmary and Brookline.  For anyone who lives on or walks along this intersection, it is clear that not only is Glenmary used as a high speed thoroughfare but this intersection poses a real risk to pedestrians and vehicles alike.  I am sure that all of us have had a dangerous experience at that intersection as a result of one of the following situations:

As a pedestrian:

o   Cars come over the hill at high speeds with little distance for stopping

o   There is no crosswalk

o   There are only sidewalks on one side of Glenmary and one side of Brookline, forcing pedestrians to cross the street

As a motorist:

o   When turning left onto Glenmary from Brookline, traffic is flowing over the hill at high speeds with little room to stop

o   When turning left onto Brookline from Glenmary, traffic is approaching from behind at high speeds with little room to stop

o   When traveling west on Glenmary, there is no indication as to what might be in the road as you come over the hill that would require you to stop

Short of adding sidewalks to Glenmary and Brookline, the only option that mitigates any of these hazards is a three way stop and/or crosswalk.  To help maintain the community atmosphere and walkability of our neighborhood I am asking you to help me and support this request to the city.  The city is conducting a study of the intersection to determine whether a three way stop is justified, however, your voice and firsthand experience is powerful.  If you have had an experience, as a pedestrian or a motorist, involving this intersection please share it via this petition. There was already a pedestrian fatality at the intersection of Clifton Ave and Glenmary Ave in the last two years, we would all be well served to remember that and to remind the city of that very unfortunate, but preventable fact.
