In the coming months, many Americans will need to take weeks off of work due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Employees may need to take a leave of absence if they have contracted the virus themselves and are ill, if they have been exposed to somebody who has or may have the virus and therefore need to be quarantined, or are caring for a sick family member.  For their own health and to help stop the spread of this malicious and extremely contagious disease they should not be at work.

Currently, the 1993 Family Medical Leave act only protects employees who have completed 12 months of service with their current employer. Therefore, millions of Americans will not be protected by FMLA if they have been in their job for under a year. This is not adequate protection for this crisis.

If employers are allowed to replace an employee who cannot or should not be at work due to the virus, for fear of job loss many employees will likely ignore quarantine protocols or continue to go to work when they are exhibiting symptoms. This will place far too many other people at risk.

Many companies and businesses will likely need to downsize because of the economic impact of this pandemic. This proposed emergency act will not protect employees from layoffs. It will only keep employers from hiring permanent replacements if they must take time off due to Covid-19.

Please sign the petition to bring attention to this urgently needed emergency Pandemic Family Medical Leave Act!
