Restriction of press and speech by Rwandan Government; Free Dieudonne Niyonsenga
Dieudonne Niyonsenga, a journalist turned youtube star has become the voice of the people through ISHEMA TV. After a previous imprisonment in Kigali's Mageragere Detention Centre, Niyonsenga voiced his concern stating, ``They did it intentionally to jail me and make me suffer”. He was later found innocent of all crimes and was released after 11 months.
Now, due to his courage to speak on issues untouched he was found “guilty” on four charges including forgery, impersonation, and “humiliating” state officials. Niyonsenga has been sentenced to seven years in prison which is a gross violation of Human rights. This instance, such as many others occuring in Rwanda, are an attack on the freedom of speech.
Human Rights Watch have been bringing awareness to this restriction of press and speech. HRW said then that "at least eight people reporting or commenting on current affairs – notably the effect of strict anti-COVID measures that have hit the poor hard – have been threatened, arrested or prosecuted in the past year". While in custody these journalist could potentially face torture and death.
Through this petition you are using your voice to let the Rwandan Government know that we are watching and will not stand for the violation of Human Rights regardless of the Global North's acceptance of it. It's absurd in it of itself that this abuse is supported by western donors due to Rwandas current economic stimulation. Human Rights abuse does not equate to a growing economy. Let your voice be heard to ensure support for the victims and continual pressure for change.
