Require all law enforcement officers to have Basic Life Support/CPR certification
Why this petition matters
I want the Department of Justice to mandate that all law enforcement officers take Basic Life Support and CPR training before they are allowed to be out in the field. When I watch videos of police brutally killing citizens in the street I see the bystander effect take place. The violence takes place and no one in the law enforcement agency steps up and intervenes. Part of being a law enforcement agent means you are on the frontlines and you are a first responder just like me. You still have a choice to do something for that individual. You need to stand up and start basic life support. As a healthcare professional, I have been on a team where we were able to resuscitate individuals without a pulse, who are bleeding out, or have cardiac arrested and have been successful in achieving ROSC aka return of spontaneous circulation using a combination of BLS, CPR and ACLS(advanced cardiovascular life support). If thats my duty as a frontline responder, maybe you won’t have as much experience but the first step in gaining experience is trying. I know this is just a small solution but maybe it will aid in the accountability of law enforcement officer’s actions. Maybe it can help redirect the conversation. Making it so that you use everything in your toolbox to help keep the individual alive just like me and my team. We aren’t perfect and mistakes are made but you can be sure that if you end up on my table in an emergency we will do everything we can to keep you alive regardless of your race, gender, age, sexuality, etc. We know you officers aren’t perfect and you will make mistakes too but we trust you to protect and serve.
