Nick Thompson started this petition to Department of Justice

The people of the United States are facing a crisis of trust with their own police force. Frequent examples of police brutality, racial profiling, and department cover ups have left the relationship between law enforcement and citizens shattered.

Repairing this damage will take more than empty promises and dialogue. There needs to be action, verifiable and immediate. Adjusting the funding of police to better reflect their role is a good start, but there must be more. The very image of the police has been tainted and thought must be given to EMOTIONAL healing as well as logistical.

At the moment, the sounds of sirens and flashing lights behind a vehicle would send many into a panic. That unmistakable siren sound brings to mind images of men being arrested, choked to death, or shot.

But police officers are meant to be a friend of the citizen! Fear and anxiety should not be a person’s first emotion when realizing a police officer has requested their time. Instead a person should feel a sense of well-being and protection. Such positive feelings will never happen as long as police are associated with the high pitched wailing of an ear shattering siren. It’s the same sound we hear in movies when a criminal escapes a prison. It would make anyone feel like a criminal.

That is why we are asking the Dept. of Justice to replace all sirens on police vehicles with a sound system that would loudly play the song “A Thousand Miles,” by the artist Vanessa Carlton.

Imagine driving along the highway, your mind drifting between the events of the day. Suddenly, behind you, your eye catches a glimpse of the dreaded “blue light flash.” Tension grips you, your heart starts to fill with fear, but then you hear: “Making my way downtown, walking fast, faces pass, and I’m homebound!”

You relax. Your tension eases. All that fear just melts away under the dulcet tones of Vanessa Carlton.

Imagine multiple police cars converging on a single spot. Instead of deafening cacophony, the lucky suspect would be graced with a private concert of peaceful, laid back tunes. The police themselves would also be affected, becoming more calm and drawing on the empathy of the words “It’s always times like these when I think of you, and I wonder if you ever think of me...”
