Karina Barrett started this petition to Department of Justice

This change will enable Prisoners to continue their Private Rehabilitation Programs via Skype throughout this Covid-19 Epedemic to enable them to be released from prison with a positive mindset and new tools to support them in the community.

This is my reason for starting this petition.

So, since COVID-19 all contact visits in the Prisons have been stopped. We haven't seen our son in person for 2 weeks. We found our ALSO all Skype training has been stopped!!! WTF!!! The Prison has 1 computer for Skype for 462 Prisoners. Now the contact visits have stopped the prison has now allowed all Prisoners (except the prisoners in the local area and their family) Skype calls. I am writing this not to whinge, I am writing this to share with you how frustrating this situation is for my son and for us as a family. Rehabilitation (which we have paid upfront) for our son has been given a back seat! The prison deem this as not important for him to do!!! He is the only Prisoner doing this program in the Prison he is in!

Having the opportunity to improve his mental and emotional health, learning tools to support himself to make sure he comes back into the community as a well adjusted young man isn't important to the Prison.  They will not budge off their decision to stop Skype for Rehabilitation.

This is unfair!  This is not just about my son this is about all Prisoners being able to access support for emotional and mental wellbeing to help minimise tensions that may arise in the Prisons during this hard time.  This is about Prisoners being able to start the rehabilitation process to begin whilst on remand!  This enables Prisoners to access the tools to change negative thought patterns and helps them adjust to being a proactive community member rather than a risk.
