Why this petition matters

Started by Lisa Carroll

Ireland is the only European country that sleeps at night, ejecting people onto the streets with a complete black out. The result is a frenzied rush to consume as much alcohol as possible before the cut off time, often with violent disruption. We all know that moderation and deregulation generally fosters sensibility though don't we? Or do we? Irish law is bogged down in Victorian British liquor licencing laws, which has no bearing on the modern day needs of our young people. When we say 'needs', it is important to note that this is not actually about alcohol.

Cities like Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam are full of night time vibrancy. Young people gather to celebrate their music, their passions, their talents and their individuality. That is cultural well-being. That is expression. That is what our young Irish people are entitled to.

Our old laws are centred around our pub culture and heavy regulation, but what if our young talent could have the opportunity of opening or using an abandoned venue (all night) without being hampered by disapproval or overly rigorous licencing laws? Treat them with respect and trust them with a licence. Our young population are our wealth - let's inspire and keep them in Ireland.

Please sign this petition as soon as you can (deadline 21st January) or you can make your own submission: https://www.justice.ie/en/JELR/Pages/open-consultation-sale-of-alcohol
