Following the end of his term in January 2021, former President Donald J. Trump broke federal law by taking presidential documents with him to his resort in Mar-a-Lago. He also broke federal law by destroying official documents. Specifically, this law is called the Presidential Records Act (1978). Under Title 18, Section 2071, of the U.S. Code, anyone found guilty of “willfully and unlawfully” concealing, removing, mutilating, obliterating, destroying, or attempting to do any such action against a record can be fined and imprisoned for up to three years. In addition to fines and possible imprisonment, anyone holding federal office who is convicted of this crime can lose his or her position and be disqualified from holding federal office in the future. Additional information can be found here.

By violating this law, Trump has again violated the trust of the American public. He must be held accountable, lest other precious records are lost due to irresponsible behavior. We must hold all people accountable to the law. Please sign this petition so that Congress and the Department of Justice know that they must hold President Trump accountable to the laws of the United States at all times.
