Say No To Helicopter Noise - No Commercialisation of Katoomba Airfield!

The Blue Mountains is world famous for feeling a million clicks from anywhere, but this is now under threat.

In June 2019, the NSW Department of Industry will decide if it will issue a long-term lease that will see commercial operators use Katoomba Airfield for helicopter tourism. This will mean scenic heli-charter flights or 'joy flights'.

Businesses cannot operate without turning a profit. To get a return on the investments being made at the site, the potential new operators will need to significantly increase the number of flights into and above the mountains.

This use is not compatible with the airfield’s sensitive location—at the top of the Blue Mountains surrounded by world heritage-listed national park.

The lessee could also transfer the lease. Once a lease is granted under the Crown Lands Act it is not only transferable but may be converted to a lease in perpetuity and/or freehold. Should this happen, the community will have no control over helicopter  flights in and out of the airfield and there will be no control over flights over the Grose Valley wilderness.

The Blue Mountains are iconic. A special place for locals and visitors alike—as much enjoyed for their peaceful serenity as for their beautiful views, rare plants and animals. We need to protect Blue Mountains towns, lookouts, wild valleys and escarpment from the intrusion of helicopter noise.

The airfield is currently used by emergency services. We support this continued use.

However, we strongly object to the issue of a commercial license and the associated increase in aircraft traffic and joy flights into the Blue Mountains.

We also have a print petition seeking to present to Parliament. When you are in the Blue Mountains please add your signature, find out where to sign through our Facebook page.
