Eastern Cape Nurses started this petition to Department of health Eastern Cape and

Memorandum of Demands

Background
For a long time, nurses in the eastern cape and south Africa as a whole, have been subjected to a sexist and racist system, which undermines the role and remuneration for nurses. This has been intensified by the failure of the government to abide paying the third instalment of an increment for public sector workers as previously negotiated thus exposing the arrogance of the employer towards workers.  Administrative incentives for PMDS remain a thorny issue as the process is not transparent and minimal efforts exist to rectify it. The recent COVID-19 pandemic and Lockdown has shown healthcare workers, particularly nurses, that they are on their own. From lack of Personal Protective Equipment to being understaffed, nurses have been and are still on the forefront, fighting to save lives with minimal assistance from the government. Lack of transparency, communication and working in a hostile environment, a hostile department is leading to nurses having no choice but to stand up for their rights. The recent and ongoing deaths of our colleagues hurts us deeply as it reminds us about the level of sacrifice, we give towards serving the public with no one available to serve us. We die as a statistic, no heroes recognition, nothing being said except that we took an oath or pledge of service. This is absurd, disheartening, and cruel to say the least. It is through that background that as Eastern Cape Nurses we demand:

·         Paying of the salary increment for 2020 financial year and to continue with negotiations with the Trade Unions.

·         Danger Allowance for all Healthcare Workers and nurses in particular.

·         Payment of rural allowance for Enrolled Nurses and Enrolled Nursing Assistants.

·         Absorbing contract workers, in particular nurses, so as to boost the human resource capacity of healthcare facilities in the Eastern Cape and South Africa at large.

·         Transparency regarding PMDS and yearly payments to workers.

·         Reviewing of the entry salary level for Nurses as it makes no sense as to why a professional nurse with a degree at NQF level 8 is paid lesser than a pharmacist with the same NQF level.

·         Reviewing of policy that demands a 10 year service for moving up grades to at least 5 years of service.

·         Nurses demand mass availability of quality personal protective equipment to perform their duties in a safe environment.

·         We demand recognition for the immense work that we as nurses perform daily for this province and for the country, we demand our voices to be heard.
