Help Fight Childhood Obesity

This petition had 162 supporters

More than half of the leading causes of death in the Philippines are due to the cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and cancer, also known as the "fatal four" non-communicable diseases. There are factors that lead to the "fatal four" which are overweight or obesity, hypertension, high blood sugar and high total cholesterol. The increasing trend of obesity in the Philippines is alarming. Studies show aside from insufficient food intake, malnutrition also stems from overeating. Obesity, a new form of malnutrition, has emerged as an urgent challenge affecting the country which, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Philippines is among the countries with high levels of obesity and under-nutrition. Obesity as a form of malnutrition often coexists with under-nutrition and results from shifts from local and traditional diets to foods that are increasingly heavy in salt, sugar and fat or processed foods.

According to the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, the number of obese children and adolescents has also been on the rise in the Philippines -- and the rest of the world -- over the last decade. Results of nutritional surveys among Filipinos reveal slow but steady increasing rates of childhood overweight and obesity cases. Overweight and obese children are more likely to stay obese into their adulthood, and more likely to develop NCDs at a younger age, experts said.

So with all these being said, we, as fellow youth of this generation who have been granted the ability and chance to raise awareness in this situation, we are humbly asking for your support in this matter by signing this petition. This would help in giving children more programs by the Department of Health and other partner organizations on how they could manage and be aware on the food they’re taking.
