Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common disease among artists, laborers, and students. Symptoms of it are:
- and tingling of the hand
The pain is caused by the compression of a major nerve where it passes over the carpal bones through a passage through the front of the wrist, alongside the flexor tendons of the hand, repetitive movements over a long period of time, and fluid retention. It can be treated at home but in some severe cases, a surgery may be in order (endoscopic surgery and open surgery) to release the pressure build up in the nerves (Newson, 2014).
General causes of this, as stated, are repetitive movements of the hand, but the inadequate working facilities or work spaces provided is also a factor to be considered. Diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis also contribute in the faster development of CTS. Many artists suffer from this syndrome that, although not severe at most times, can affect their work, productivity, and may damage the nerves in the hands. We, as artists and women ourselves, are concerned by this growing issue in the Philippines. The fact that this is a common issue may tell us that certain facilities and policies should be amended and improved, as well as promoting healthy lifestyle among Filipinos to help lessen the cases of CTS. We ask you to support us to raise awareness for the betterment of artists, students, and laborers. Thank you.
