The UK Coal Authority, on behalf of the Department of Energy and Climate Change has granted ‘Clean Coal Ltd.’ five conditional licenses to operate in Swansea Bay. This project, and others like it, involves further exploiting a finite resource and maintaining CO2 emissions. Therefore, the Department of Energy and Climate Change, as well as Swansea City and County Council need to reconsider the environmental impact that underground coal gasification would cause. No drilling should take place without a thorough environmental impact assessment. Both bodies should also consider building sustainable jobs in the ‘green sector’ as a means of creating new job opportunities without harming the environment.
