In grade school and high school, students are taught the basics of the four core classes, English, math, science, and history. While these are all important areas to be educated in, I believe it is also important for students to learn and be educated on mental health tools. A perfect solution for this is to incorporate Ross Gay's poetry into the English curriculum. Ross Gay is an American poet who reflects on the power and importance of gratitude throughout his writing. Two of his pieces focus specifically on the power of gratitude, Catalog of Unbashed Gratitude and The Book of Delights. If students had the opportunity to read these books in class, they be exposed to both contemporary poetry and the idea of including the practice of gratitude in their everyday lives. By teaching students the importance of gratitude during their developmental years, they're more likely to start creating a habit of living through gratitude each day which can lead to many benefits for them. People who practice gratitude have been scientifically proven to be healthier, happier, physically healthier, less depressed, experience less PTSD, and have better relationships. Students could benefit greatly from learning this life tool at a young age.
