Each state teaches state history in school. Many elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the U.S. are not learning about the history of slavery. Many students are aware of Black History Month, while many are not. Even with a month to recognize Black individuals, industry, or accomplishments, there is a lack of organized education focusing on history and how that impacts several of the positive and challenging happenings in present day society. Learning about the history of Slavery and watching documentaries such as “Eye on the Prize,” to learn about post slavery trials and residual complications from slavery can build awareness for other cultures within and external of descendants of slaves. Having gone to school on the East Coast, West Coast, and in the South, it wasn’t until learning about Georgia History in Atlanta that I was exposed to more history about Black History than in any other school ever before and since then. It was an education that all students nationwide can and should be able to benefit from.
