Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, also known as CTS, is an injury caused by median nerve entrapment and it causes pain and weakness in the hand and wrist affected. CTS develops when the tissues around the median nerve swell and press on the nerve. It is caused by repetitive tasks, overuse syndromes and chronic upper limb pain syndrome. However, in most cases recorded, it has no known cause.
In order to prevent further increase of cases of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, it is important for people to have appropriate knowledge regarding the said injury. One can start minimizing the stress that has accumulated on a person's hands and wrists by following these precautions: (www.mayoclinic.org)
- Reduce your force and relax your grip.
- Take frequent breaks
- Watch your form
- Avoid bending your wrist all the way up or down. Always place your wrist at a relaxed middle position
- Watch and improve your posture
- Keep your hands warm
- If you work in a cold environment without anything to cover your hands, you are most likely to develop pain and stiffness,
These are only some of the basic information regarding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. However, it is unknown to most people including those that have the most vulnerability to the matter. Let us start educating individuals especially those under the art department of every college that they may be aware. As his holiness, Dalai Lama once said, "It is not enough to be compassionate. You must act."
With this in mind, let us act together now! The C in curriculum must mean carpal tunnel syndrome awareness. Everywhere and for everyone.
