Audrey Moreau started this petition to Department of Education and

Due to the rise of cases and new strains of the COVID-19 virus in the U.S., we are seeing an increase of cases within our school system. The school that I work at, in particular, Serves students with the most severe disabilities and medical needs ages 3-22 years. Severe disabilities include physical, cognitive and social deficits. On our district website, there is a dashboard with documented or confirmed cases. This school has the highest number of staff cases. Students numbers are low, but due to their disabilities, parents aren’t screening or testing the children, so those numbers may not be accurate.

Some schools have over-flow areas where students are put, to avoid over crowding the classrooms. Some of these over-flow zones include, media centers, hallways, and auditoriums. Students who have returned to brick and mortar are doing work on their laptop to eliminate use of paper and pens etc. We are often short staffed and there aren’t many substitutes, which may leave classes to be merged.

As one of the largest school districts in Florida, we should have not re-opened schools, especially my school where our student population are mostly disabled and medically needy. Our students are at higher risk and more vulnerable, which puts the staff at risk.

I am starting this petition In hopes to reach local and state officials to come to an agreement on school closures, to decrease the  rise of cases in our school district and keep our students and staff safe. Staff and Employees are asking, “How many more positive cases do we need, in order to have school closure?”
