Students are now known as the digital natives of our time. Living in this modernized world, they’ve grown up with technology; simply put, it’s already interconnected into their lives. For the past few years, people of different professions have been evaluating the potential benefits & risks of technology in education. While technology gives us the advantage of experimenting with different types of pedagogy, accessibility to education, and engaging students to different activities it also gives us the disadvantage of distracting students during lessons and sometimes fosters cheating within the classroom. Due to the fact that technology causes so many detrimental effects to students, we must ban the use of technology within the classroom to prevent these effects from occurring.

Students shouldn’t be allowed to use technology in the classroom due to it being a big distraction to students and their studies. According to the study that was conducted by The Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, they compared students who texted during lessons against those who did not texted. It was founded in their study that those students who texted during class wrote low quality notes. They also did worse on their exams and remembered less information than the students who did not texted during class. According to a survey, the percentage of students that agreed that using mobile phones during discussions degrades their ability to pay attention is 80%.

Technology also enables students to cheat. Through technology, cheating becomes easier to commit. Technology gives innovative tools for cheating. As a result, we must ban the use of technology in class to prevent students from cheating in exams, tests, and activities. According to Dispatch, the increased usage of technology across different schools is a big factor that contributed to the easiness for students to cheat and copy someone’s homework. In the United States, 62% of students have been reported for the act of cheating on exams, tests, and projects through the use of connected devices such as phones.

Furthermore, disconnect students from having social interactions. They most likely want to look and scroll at their phones instead of talking or interacting with others. This is evident in us millennial which is a generation intertwined with technology. It is believed that an individual’s ability to communicate is related to their ability to socialize with others. Millennial, such as ourselves, are now experiencing a hard time communicating with others beyond the use of our devices due to the negative effect of using technology. Because of technology’s influence, students also lack many fundamental communication skills such as social cues. Since using technology hinders our communication and social skills, it will detach us, emotionally & socially, from the real world.
