All Students need mental health break days! 20% of all American children struggle with mental health. However, 80% of these kids will never receive the help they deserve. This is where schools can step in. Implementing a law that gives students a day off when they're struggling with mental health demonstrates that schools genuinely care about their student’s well-being. "For schools to recognize that sometimes it’s better to take a mental health day than push through when you cannot seem to cope, is a tremendous support for students to feel understood and accepted, and [this, in turn, encourages] students to understand and accept themselves more,” says Shelli Dry, Occupational Therapist and director of clinical operations at Enable My Child. Such a law would support all those children who aren't able to get mental help, and reduce the negative stigma around mental illnesses. If the mental health of adolescents continues to be ignored, millions of children would continue to suffer on their own. If all students could take an excused absence when dealing with mental health struggles, that would significantly help the mental health of adolescents.
