"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" - Nelson Mandela. Being a teacher is one of the most crucial jobs in the world as they are the ones who inspire the next generation to achieve their dreams and make a difference. Let that sink in; the next generation, the ones who are going to be running our society. As a student I see the hard work and effort teachers put into their job (although I'm sure this goes far beyond what I see). They are committed to helping their students in any possible way and are always there when children feel like they have no one else to talk to. Even when teachers go home, the workload never stops as they are always on their toes marking, giving feedback and preparing lessons. To have a job that involves listening, coaching, mentoring, simplifying the complex, helping students reveal their skills and helping underachievers fly every single day should be highly respected. Plato, one of the greatest known philosophers who shaped many of our beliefs today, wouldn't have even been the same person he was without his teacher, Socrates, who inspired him and gave him ideas that were worth discovering. http://theconversation.com/three-charts-on-teachers-pay-in-australia-it-starts-out-ok-but-goes-downhill-pretty-quickly-122782 Just looking at these graphs and finding out that a teaching degree in Australia offers almost no chance of earning a high income is truly heartbreaking. First-year teachers only earn between AU$65,608 and $69,000 annually. This is the same as a retail store manager. A large percentage of a high school teacher's pay is based on their level of experience. This percentage should be smaller as teachers who are first or second year are more likely to be younger and know more about society today, which is relevant when teaching children in this generation. Even a teacher who has worked for 4 years only earns AU$65,421. Something needs to change! If you are interested in making a change or helping with this issue please support this petition, Help make a difference for the generations now and many to come.
