Why this petition matters

Started by Mikayla Humiston

Over 30% of students at higher education institutions in the United States face food insecurity. The USDA defines food insecurity as “a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life.” It's been found that students experience food insecurity at a higher rate than the national average. It is more prominent among students that live off-campus and is correlated with annually increasing costs of a higher education.

Hunger threatens a student’s health and wellbeing, impairs their cognitive ability, and can result in threatening their economic security in the long term. Your signature on this petition would help in the fight to increase rates of food SECURITY. We are targeting those who can make a difference such as higher education administration, government officials and policymakers.

Suggestions for improvement include, but are not limited to, campus food waste and surplus management, as well as redistribution to students who are experiencing hunger. Additionally, institutions could establish partnerships with local organizations such as regional food banks to organize food pantries on campuses.

Your support is greatly appreciated!
