Advocacy NJ started this petition to Department of Education

Did you know that there are 47 million adults in our country that cannot read their own mail? Did you know that 3 out of 10 children in our country are considered failing in reading? Science behind reading and literacy instruction has been published and produced most widely since the late 80's and still, we do not have research-driven instruction in our schools.

A most recent study from the National Council on Teacher Quality- shows our country's reading crisis- and we all need to help make the change. The Mississippi Department of Education has implemented changes and it is working!

School administrations need to be held accountable. Our teachers need resources, support, and training. Our colleges need to be held accountable to provide research based education. It is affecting children who do not have any reading or learning disability in the areas of language, literacy, reading, listening, spelling, and writing. They are simply not being taught in these areas. Further, studies show that there is a disproportionality of racial and ethnic groups receiving the research based instruction.

This is not just an issue in education- it involves standing up to systemic racism, our incarceration system,  and combatting mental health decline in our youth. By signing this petition, you will be joining us to demand that our Department of Education require states to implement reading standards promoting early and structured literacy development backed by research.

Join us to demand a Federal Literacy Act.
