In a time where we work to support individuals and be inclusive we are still using the exclusion process within schools when incidents occur.

It is proven that just 4% of students who are educated within a Pupil Referral Unit after exclusion will go on to pass their gcses to a college minimum standard. Pupil Referral Units should be a last resort and are required to manage some students behaviour while offering a education which meets their needs.

(I cannot stress that PRUs work tirelessly to support students with mentors and smaller staff ratios with dedication in very challenging situations. Their work is essential and very much appriciated).

In an age of Inclusion and creating better outcomes for children and young people we need to change our approach to the exclusion process to make it about improving life chances with a good, strong education with adequate support in place.

What is inclusion - it isn't only about special educational needs, it applies to you and me too: https://www.inclusion.me.uk/news/what_does_inclusion_mean

Approaches to consider

(public and professional input requred. To be added to and updated as new information comes to light, please participate by adding your ideas)

*Exclusion Processes to be handled externally from schools using independent, uninfluenced, experienced and impartial panels put together by the local education department.

* Referrals to be made for additional support by the impartial panel compulsory if not already in place for mental health, behaviour support, family support and Educational Health Care Plans to enable all to understand the individual and how we can ensure they are getting the support they require if the school is not providing this as an intervention process. Many young people are excluded with no futhur support leaving the child and family struggling to manage. Referrals would ensure that all avenues have been throughly explored and the families adequately supported.

* Exclusion to be renamed to reflect the referral process and aim to support the individual involved along with their families and the school. Schools can be potentially struggling to manage challenging individuals and may require support themselves.

We are not condoning violent school behaviour, we understand that the school environment needs to be safe for all who attend. What we want to see more of is intervention and support for those who find themselves in the school removal process as this will impact on their adult lives. The potential is that with intervention they will be more likely to be able to contribute to society positively as an adult.

Thank you, we need your support to make a difference. Your experiences are welcome, please share them with us.
