Melissa Devolve started this petition to Department of Education

College tuition has increased astronomically over the years making it almost impossible for many young adults to afford it.  Students and parents end up taking out high amounts of loans that are extremely hard to pay back when they finish school.  With education climbing and jobs looking for employers with higher degrees of education, this is leaving students with no other option than to turn to loans as a way of paying for their education.

According to Forbes, the average cost of attending a four-year college or university in the United States rose by 497% between the 1985-86 and 2017-18 academic years, more than twice the rate of inflation. Currently, the tuition average increases about 8% per academic year which means tuition will double every nine years.  Also, there aren’t many policies in place to prevent colleges from increasing other tuition fees such as room board, textbooks, supplies, etc. creating another burden for many families.  By limiting the amount of tuition increase to 2% yearly, leaving the same tuition costs to any student who completes their degree in the same institution, and not increasing other tuition fees will allow families to prepare themselves financially, low-income students will have better chances of receiving higher education, and middle-class families will not be in debt for many years to come.

We are starting this petition as graduate students looking for the federal government to put a cap on tuition increases in both private and public colleges.  This will allow the college to be affordable to low-income and middle-class students and allow families the opportunity to be more financially stable.
