A major shift in education technology occurred a few years ago. School systems around the world started buying Chromebooks for student use. Now, Google has announced that Chrome devices will reach "Automatic Update Expiration" and no longer be supported or updated.

The actual devices are still working and running well. However, the software and security will not be patched. This effectively makes a functional piece of educational equipment useless. The devices were chosen because of the ease of use and management. They are efficient and relatively inexpensive. Chromebooks have been a blessing to technology departments, teachers, and students. There are many programs and applications that educators and students can use for productivity on the Chromebook.

School systems around the United States are going to be forced into spending large sums of money to repurchase new equipment to replace existing equipment that still works. Federal, state, and local dollars are essentially going to be poured into the bottomless pit of planned obsolescence.

The counter argument is that this policy will help support innovation and put the most up-to-date equipment in our hands. While technically true, the downside is that functional equipment, fine for many tasks done in school, will become worthless.

Capitalism is a wonderful economic system that grows wealth and prosperity. However, when greed and monopolization enters the system, the rich get richer and the common person suffers.

I call for Google, Inc. to rescind the decision to end support of older Chrome devices and continue the support of this technology for students and educators everywhere.
