Change how we teach kids about slavery

The issue that we are petitioning about is the approach taken to history lessons that are being taught at schools. What we mean is that history classes, books, and other history related components aren’t teaching enough about minorities. Classes go over these topics quickly and don’t show the multiple perspectives of the minorities and they don’t show how it affects the world right now. Since everyone is required to take history classes, this is considered a National topic. As some people might say it would be too expensive to provide new educational material however teachers have access to online materials.

If you want to extend the rights of African Americans this is the right petition to sign. We would like to revise history teachings so that slavery is seen as an immoral act and not just a moment in history. Some biased teachings will lead to students seeing this time in the past as the way we still look at people today. The Board of Education has a responsibility to all students to teach them in the way that they want to.

All members of our group have experienced one sided method of teaching. As seniors we have been through the standard high school history education. We each come from diverse ethnic backgrounds so we can provide a variety of perspectives. As students that weren’t personally affected by this we still feel it is unethical. This injustice has had one of the biggest impacts on the African American society and we would like to change this now and for future generations.

Our purpose is the need for change in the school system and for there to be an emphasis on how slavery was a blemish in countries history rather than it just being an unfortunate event as a kid. With this we can make it so that kids can know at a young age the struggles and setbacks African Americans have faced. With this we can work our way up to demolishing this sense of privilege and ultimately racial discrimination at a young age rather than letting it grow with time.
