Due to the recent pandemic, the past two academic years have been far from ordinary, as well as this year. However, this year, for the first time, students are back in school full time, relying on masks and social distancing to stop the spread. The reality is that it’s not working. Students are constantly being sent home due to either being exposed to or contracting COVID-19 themselves, and missing crucial learning time because of it. Unlike last year, there is no virtual learning option for those students unable to come to school for health reasons. As a result of this, students are constantly stressed and their mental health is deteriorating. Suicide rates are higher than before. With the virtual learning option, those students could still participate in the classroom, just like last year, without falling behind the rest of their peers. The virtual option also allows high-risk students or students who live in a high-risk household to learn stress-free and in a safe environment. Those who wish to stay in school would continue on as normal, possibly with the opportunity to spread out more in the classroom and reduce case numbers dramatically. Covid has caused students to fall back far too much already. They cannot afford to fall back anymore, not when there’s a safe option for everyone. It’s simply unfair to not re-introduce virtual learning, as its absence has already done so much damage as we continue to battle this pandemic. Consider virtual learning; do what’s right for our children.
