Suzy Hutchins started this petition to Department of Education

I am a Primary School teacher and Mum to a gorgeous 11 year old boy who lives with High Functioning Autism and Dyslexia. He copes very well and enjoys learning despite having a unique learning profile that makes the standard teaching methods challenging to access.

I also teach Mindfulness and Mental Well-being in a number of schools and see many children similar to William who have a huge lack of self esteem and see their learning profiles as negative attributes.

It is time to recognise how damaging titles such as Specific Learning Difficulties really are for all the children growing up with this attached to them. I’d like to see it changed to Unique Learning Profile. A title which acknowledges that children simply learn in different ways. Children with Dyslexia only have ‘difficulties’ because the National Curriculum doesn’t include teaching in a way that they are able to learn. Please join me in forcing the Department for Education to review this outdated title and give children with a unique learning profile an accurate and fitting description that is positive. If we win all the children who are found to have a ULP going forward will go through life seeing it as simply that and without a perception that learning will be difficult!
