Education Secretary Leonor Briones has issued a department order providing the policy and guidelines on healthy food and beverage choices in schools and all education department offices as outlined in Deped Order No.13 issued last March 14. According to the Department of Education, unhealthy eating patterns — more sugars, fats and oils and less leafy vegetables and whole grain cereals — has led to an upward surge in obesity.
School is a place where students spend almost half of their lives, they stay 10 hours everyday inside this community therefore I stand to ban selling unhealthy foods whether in private or public schools. This petition is not only for the students but also for the department officers or teachers who are involved in the said community.
Prohibition of unhealthy foods and beverage such as soft drinks, sports water, products containing caffeine, ice cream, cakes, donuts, french fries, instant noodles, chicken skin, bacon, junk food and canned fruits in heavy syrup all be helpful for the students and department officers or teachers to live longer and healthy lifestyle because Briones said that schools are one of the good venues to promote a healthier lifestyle among Filipinos, especially the youths.
I want every youth to learn to live a healthy lifestyle for minimizing their consumption of unhealthy foods and beverages so that they will be able to live a happy life too, and this will start where they spend most of their time which is their school. Remember this people "When you are healthy, you are happy."
