About 20,000 college applicants of Ireland who have applied for college places this year (2020) with Leaving Cert results achieved prior to 2020 are at risk of being disadvantaged in this year's CAO points race.

This is because Minister for Education Norma Foley confirmed this week 01/09/2020, that calculated grades for the Leaving Cert class of 2020 will be “stronger” than results in previous years which will result in some grade inflation.

It has also emerged that teachers awarded more than twice the number of top H1 grades to students in many subjects than would have been expected in the normal Leaving Cert.

This great news for the 60,000 anxious Leaving Cert students of 2020 but how is the 20,000 pre-2020 Leaving Cert students going to compete with these inflated grades this year. There's always been a 1 or 2% difference in CAO points between years but this year is like no other year, there's no fair competition between the 2020 class and the pre-2020 class.

Unless the issue of “real grades” versus “inflated grades” is addressed immediately, the pre-2020 Leaving Cert students will have their legitimate expectations of a college place cast aside, simply because they did not leave school in 2020.
