Many schools have a strict uniform and haircut policy, which when not adhered to, the child is taken out of lessons, often through no fault of their own. The same is true for minor infractions, such as trousers being 1cm too short for example (Source: BBC Nottinghamshire online report 05/09/2019. Kids grow up quickly and it is not always affordable for parents to replace parts of uniform throughout the school year.

This practice should be discouraged as it is obvious that it is often not the fault of the child. Schools should be encouraging independence and allowing freedom of expression, while at the same time experiencing a sense of belonging. A policy of isolation, or being sent home for non-behavioural issues are clearly upsetting to the pupil and disrupting their education needlessly.

There should be a more business like approach in schools to prepare pupils for the outside world in a more realistic and caring manner. Strict enforcement policies of uniforms should be replaced by understanding, flexibility via a more tolerant approach, based on the individual student's circumstances. As an additional measure, schools should be restricted from insisting uniforms be purchased from a single place of business and allow provision for variation on standard guidelines. Ultimately it is the child's education and well being that matters.
