Melissa Kley started this petition to Department of Education

In the US 1 in 5 adults have diagnosed mental illness, these are just the diagnosed cases, there is no accurate statistic for undiagnosed mental illness currently. Almost 30% of these cases are found in young adults between 18 and 25. For most of these young adults there diagnosis is a shocking and terrifying revelation, this is because most of what they know about mental illness is misinformation or nothing at all.

This petition is to reach out to the US department of education to change this. All high school students should be taught about mental illness, they should learn how to deal with mental illness in themselves and in others. They should learn the signs and symptoms, to recognize mental illness. They should learn about importance of getting help, to remove the stigma of seeing a professional for diagnosis and treatment. They should learn most mental illness can be controlled with medication to the point they have little to no effect on a persons daily life.

By ensuring students are properly educated about mental illness we can reduce the amount of undiagnosed mental illnesses, get young adults the therapy and medication they need early in their life, and most importantly we can save the lives of those who need it most by showing them it is ok to reach out for help when they are in their darkest moments, before they harm themselves or others.
