FACTS not FICTION

This summer the island of Zakynthos in Greece has been subjected to a continued trial by certain UK media. This is a repeat of something that now seems to occur every summer. This year it’s been worse.

This year some UK press stories have been relentless and many seem to be “fabricated” with very few actual facts. Many leading with calling Zakynthos a “Party Island”. Something that is increasingly disparaging to those who live on the island. These stories have caused many issues for island residents, businesses and tourists.

This year certain UK Journalists have tried to infiltrate Zakynthos groups for information; on one occasion they managed to get into a private group and created a news story using information from the group without permission, including comments and full names.

Other stories have been written by some UK newspapers this year where information taken from tourists personal Facebook feeds.

Many stories have also written by certain UK newspapers this year using “photographic and video evidence” from events/parties/boats trips that didn’t even take place in 2020, as a basis for a story.

These stories have caused untold damage to Zakynthos, and most of what has been printed has been untrue, with no basis for fact, with information taken without permission.

We understand freedom of the press, freedom of the press is important as it enables stories to be told, but they should be done in a factual and moral way.

Unfortunately some British press aren’t doing this. They are acting immorally, creating fake stories which panic tourists and hurt Zakynthians. The damage that the British press have and are still doing to the island of Zakynthos is appalling and we would ask that the papers who have caused these issues be held to account for the continuing distress and damage they are doing to the residents and businesses of Zakynthos.

Once signed, this petition will be presented to the National Union of Journalists and the UK Government Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport for consideration and further discussion.
