Our Democracy is in crisis. It is under threat from our fellow citizens who have been incited or encouraged by the former President of the United States, members of Congress, state government leaders, and now military officials. And the federal government appears to be standing idly by while it happens.

In 2017, retired Army LTG Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with the Russian ambassador. He cooperated extensively with prosecutors, but then reversed course, accused the government of trying to frame him, withdrew his guilty plea, and entered a second plea of not guilty. He did this despite acknowledging the underlying conduct that was against the law and while close to receiving a sentence. He received a pardon in November 2020 and faced NO consequences for his crimes. The Army and Department of Defense (DOD) did nothing.

On Memorial Day 2021 weekend, a time when we remember those who gave their lives in service to this country, Flynn appeared at a "For God & and Country Patriot Roundup" conference in Dallas TX. When asked why what happened in Myanmar can’t happen here, Flynn responded: "No reason. I mean, it should happen here."

The government in Myanmar was overthrown by its military in February 2021. This is what Flynn was suggesting should happen here in the United States. We know there are white supremacists in the military, and we know they support the former president. Why should we doubt they wouldn't take Flynn seriously? Why should we doubt there aren't other senior leaders like him, encouraging our military?

It's been reported by numerous sources that the former president is confident he'll be reinstated in August. Are we facing yet another insurrection attempt? There were military members involved in the first one. What if this one is bigger? More effective?

Military officers (and senior government officials) swear an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign AND domestic. Michael Flynn's past and present conduct is antithetical to that oath--a threat to our democracy and the safety of our elected leaders and fellow citizens. It is also prejudicial to good order and discipline, in violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), and perhaps a violation of 10 U.S. Code § 894 - Art. 94. Lastly, it is a slap in the face to our fallen heroes, those currently serving, and those who have served. He has at least twice violated his oath. And still, the Army and DOD remain silent. Military members have been punished and discharged for much less like adultery, homosexuality, and fraternization, but the message you're sending now is that traitorous and seditionist conduct is okay. At what point will there be consequences?

Michael Flynn has shown us that he is no man of duty, honor, and country. His conduct should not go unpunished. He should be recalled to active duty, court-martialed, reduced in rank, and stripped of all of the rights, privileges, and benefits afforded to him as a retiree. Our tax dollars should not go toward supporting a traitor and seditionist. He has tried to walk back his comments, but only because of the backlash. He's a smart man, who still has his wits about him; he knew exactly what he was saying. The very fact that he appeared at this Q-Anon gathering of seditionists indicates his support for their ideas, including their belief in a stolen election. No military member, present or former, should be allowed to get away with this.

As the top-ranking official in the Department of Defense, we are calling on Secretary of Defense General Austin to DO SOMETHING! Military members need to understand this is not acceptable behavior and that any words or acts of sedition will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Or else we must be prepared to live with the consequences of doing nothing.
