Rikers Island daily average of inmate population is 10,000 and the maximum is 15,000. Currently they are short staffed due to COs quitting and not coming to work because they are overworked and can’t take a break of any kind. Who are we to blame them for not wanting to work in such conditions? Now we have at least 15,000 inmates left unsupervised, living in unsanitary housing conditions, governing themselves. People are getting hurt. PEOPLE ARE DYING! 12 people has died so far in a couple months span. It’s time to move these inmates into the proper facilities so the can get the rehabilitation, medical attention, housing, etc that they need. I believe in everyone living by the decisions that they make, but does that mean that we deserve to be treated less of a human because of it? This is why I’m creating the petition to help save inmates who have family, friends and even the ones that feel like they don’t matter cause they don’t have anyone. WE MUST SHUT DOWN RIKERS ISLAND BEFORE ANYONE ELSE GETS HURT! These people deserve their basic human rights.
