We're in here for the long haul
Jun 3, 2019 —
Please don't lose heart. We're going to keep plugging away.
We will not give up.
This campaign to achieve improved access to our coastline needs the nod from the Department of Conservation to progress.
Frustratingly, we are still waiting for a response, two months after we sent our submission to DOC Northland Director Sue Reed-Thomas.
There is now urgency as a bridge on the existing farm road requires upgrading within a year, according to DOC. There is no reason why the current adjacent landowners, who use the publicly owned road, should have to pay. This needs to be sorted soon.
You may remember that DOC, the Far North District Council and Ngati Rehia gave this campaign the thumbs up back in 2006.
And since then we have lost more of our beaches to high-end developments.
This is our last chance to give everybody access to a diverse and beautiful stretch of coastline.
The ocean offers the most popular, affordable form of recreation for all citizens.
Survey findings released by the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand show the positive impact spending time in nature has on the mental health of New Zealanders.
And both DOC and our council are bound by law to identify where the public have the right of access to the coast, or where foreshore reserves, public access ways, formed roads or tracks, should be created to maintain or enhance such access.
DOC and FNDC please don’t fail us this time.
More than 5,600 people have now signed this petition.
Public access to the coast is close to the hearts of us all and should be taken to national level to prevent other areas losing out as we have.
Let's get the Taronui access underway for next summer as a start!
