Simon Roch started this petition to Department for the Environment

The population of wild deer in the UK is higher than ever and is increasing. This results in overgrazing of sensitive habitats, reduced biodiversity in overpopulated areas, unacceptable damage to commercial crops increased vehicular deer collisions and poorer health and even starvation of the deer population themselves. As deer have no natural predators to control the population, we have to maintain the balance to allow other species of animals and plants to survive. When managing deer it is imperative that deer welfare is paramount and this is best achieved using highly trained deer managers who balance the deer population with the habitat.

The Deer Initiative is a broad partnership of statutory, voluntary and private sector interests dedicated to ‘ensuring the delivery of a sustainable wild deer population in England and Wales’ www.thedeerinitiative.co.uk Partners include organisations such as the RSPCA, RSPB and Highways England. All the members of the Partnership abide by the principles of the Deer Accord and encourage others to share their commitment and priorities as an integral part of their management.

The Deer Initiative help by coordinating management practices on a regional and country wide scale, provide high quality, impartial advice on deer management, arrange excellent training to both experienced and less experienced deer managers which includes the Best Practice Advice which is available in print or via the website.

Due to changes within the sector the Deer Initiative have announced that they will close in 2020 due to lack of funding. This will leave a huge void in the deer management sector that will inevitably lead to poorer management standards, lack of a coordinated management plan, increased conflict between landowners and the general public with deer and will inevitably result in loss of habitat, reduced biodiversity and loss of production in commercial crops.

Securing funding for the Deer Initiative, or perhaps the incorporation into a larger body would allow this important organisation to continue their valuable work. As the Deer Initiative is small (less than 10 employees) the cost of providing this service would be quite low in comparison to other larger organisations, yet their impact on deer management and welfare across England and Wales is considerable.

I would therefore appreciate if anyone who values the maintenance of a heathy wild deer population at a sustainable level using humane management methods would sign this petition.
