Maddi Taylor started this petition to Department for Education

Many students across the country including myself are extremely unhappy with the idea of paying full tuition fees for a majority self-taught and/ or online degree.

This of course will vary depending on the course people are taking, however we have experienced lecturers strikes in February, with very few lessons covered and then ‘online learning’ which we were due to receive during the closure of university due to COVID-19 and this was a one hour discussion every couple of weeks for my course. So, this alone has been very disappointing!

As mentioned, my course already had to self-teach for the final months of this academic year, and to put the students under the strain and stress of doing it again starting in September is not something anyone is keen on. With mental health in mind, this is not a solution, it’s an easy way out for those in charge of education. If primary and secondary education can go back to ‘normal’ then higher education should not be ignored. Taking away the course fees or hugely reducing them will be a step in the right direction for the students and is a fair and rightful request of university students.

I know many people struggling to pay their course fees due to the impact COVID-19 has had in terms of job losses and so on. Forcing students to pay, in full, for something they won’t be receiving, in full, sounds ludicrous and unjustifiable. I don’t like the idea of students dropping out due to this misfortune, and I hope we can change these circumstances we are currently working with.

Please sign and share this petition to push those in power of making change to actually support us students during this unprecedented time, and to allow people to continue to progress further in their education.

Thank you for your support
