Lillie Weeks started this petition to Department for Education and

Students are incurring debt every term. We are all either starting a new course or continuing our original ones.

The courses we have signed up for are not the courses we hoped to attend!  And why? Because we are being offered a diluted version of the full experience and thus are unable to enjoy what we are meant to be paying for, in its entirety!   But instead we pay the full amount and end up with half the experience. Now more or less every course is purely online, with no or very limited in-person face to face contact with staff. Although understandable, as we all appreciate the measures that are having to be taken due to the current restrictions and pandemic, why though is it that students are incurring a level of debt that isn't really comparable to the degree course that we, in good faith, signed up for?

Like myself and my friends, if you are studying a very hands on and practical course, that can not be taught online all the time and requires you to be in class, in workshops using machinery, etc. Then you will understand that we can only really learn about half of what we signed up for, so why should we have a debt that should be providing us with a 100% of a course, equipment and resources, when it's only really providing about 50%, and not fully preparing us for post graduate courses or employment?

Furthermore, we have been told not to return to university and therefore, accommodation that we are expected to pay for, is sitting empty and even though many of us would ideally like to return, we can not. This is not our own choice, we all have personal, unique and different living situation which can cause studying from our current locations more difficult and in some cases, could preclude students from attending online lessons, and would benefit more from being able to use the accommodation they are expected to pay for.  Therefore, we should not be forced to pay for it when we aren't allowed to use it. We shouldn't be accumulating a debt that isn't providing us with the service or product for which we enter into a contract for.  We shouldn't be expected to pay rent when we aren't allowed to return to the accommodation which we are renting, whether we want to or not.

We are all in this together and understand that everybody is going to be fighting their own unique wars. Exceptions are being made, we just ask that you look at this for us, why should we be forgotten or ignored. We want to learn, we want to achieve our best and make the most of our educational years, but this is very hard to do, and ranking up a debt of nearly £27K, I'm sure you can understand, doesn't feel fair when we aren't receiving all we would normally have received prior to COVID19.  It does feel like we are being used to bolster the economy and being taken advantage of in order that the government can use us to add to the nations coffers, in a time when they are having to financially increase support to other UK residents/businesses etc.  It is not our place to shoulder that burden. We need support too.

If you feel students attending universities, who are not receiving the full course they signed up for, and are having their courses interrupted and severely reduced, but are still expected to pay for the FULL course fee and Accommodation fees, is unfair and unjust, and that they should have some compensation/refund or reduction in their fees, please sign this petition in order that we can raise awareness and seek assistance with this from the powers that be.
